Spurs told: ‘Forget about the Champions League and actually win something’

first_imgGlenn Hoddle has told Tottenham to forget about challenging in the Champions League or Premier League this season, and focus on winning the FA Cup or EFL Cup instead. The White Hart Lane legend says there is no point in Spurs fighting for a top four finish if they can’t even make it out of their Champions League group, after a defeat to Barcelona at Wembley dented their hopes of progression in Europe.Injury-hit Tottenham were soundly beaten 4-2 by the Spanish giants at Wembley on Wednesday night, with Lionel Messi grabbing the headlines with two goals.Maurico Pochettino branded his team ‘heroes’ following the match, but a second straight group stage defeat leaves Spurs’ European hopes in doubt as they remain pointless after two games. The result also represents a big blow to Tottenham’s lofty ambitions and raises doubts over whether this team, who are now more or less in their prime, will ever reach their goal of lifting major silverware. 2 And Hoddle has urged Spurs to forget their distant hopes of top honours this season, and instead focus on actually winning something.Asked if he can see his former club winning anything this season, Hoddle said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Not at the moment, no. I really don’t. I don’t think they’ve got the depth.“I do believe they’ve got a very good side and a great manager and they’re going forward, but at the moment they’ve just hit the buffers.“Trophies are the number one for Tottenham.“What’s the point of getting in the top four if you’re not good enough to get out of the group stages of the Champions League? I don’t get it.“Players want to win things and if that’s the FA Cup or League Cup, I think it’s a stepping stone.“That would be a foundation to go and win something else, something bigger further down the line.” The time has come for Tottenham to start delivering on all their promise under Pochettino Hoddle also said the result against Barcelona made it ‘glaringly obvious’ the club should have strengthened the squad over the summer, after they ended the transfer window without making a single signing.“I feel they should have strengthened the squad in the summer for nights exactly like this, when you get injuries and suspensions, these are the key games where you’ve got to go deep into your squad,” he said.“And I think this game shows that the squad hasn’t got the depth Pochettino and Daniel Levy really believe it had. I think that was glaringly obvious.“It was a very disappointing result, but what a performance from Barcelona and Messi, they were just wonderful.”Listen back to Glenn Hoddle on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast IN FULL above!center_img Spurs struggled against Barca without four key men – with Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele all injured 2 🗣️ Dean Saunders has a stark warning for #THFC if they don’t improve their squad and become real challengers in the Premier League and Champions League… pic.twitter.com/yVaQRQNbLQ— The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast (@SportsBreakfast) October 4, 2018last_img read more
