Swimmers prepare for Varsity

first_imgOxford University Swimming Club has just returned from a fantastic training camp in Lignano, which we hope will be a precursor to victory in the Hilary varsity competition. In 2008 we have relocated our training camp to a purpose-built training village in Italy, which incorporated an Olympic sized swimming pool for intensive long course training, a 25 metre pool for short course sprint work, and a state of the art multi-gym and sports hall complex. Swimmers took part in four hours of intensive coached pool training each day, combined with plyometrics, flexibility, and team building exercises, in preparation for what promises to be the most closely fought Varsity Match of the last decade. Many returning swimmers commented on the excellent facilities, which are unrivalled anywhere in England. The pool, which was ten lanes wide, fifty metres long, and built for the 2006 European Youth Championships, was outstanding. We were delighted to have all ten lanes to ourselves on a number of occasions, and when we shared the pool it was with the likes of the Ukrainian national swimming team, the Spanish water polo team, and the Italian synchronised swimming team. Being surrounded by international sportsmen and women certainly spurred the squad on, especially through those gruelling midweek sets when exhaustion had already set in, but the end of the camp was not yet in sight. An afternoon spent in Venice at the halfway point provided a welcome few hours of recovery and, having visited St. Mark’s Square, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Doge’s Palace, we returned to the pool refreshed and ready for more hard training. As usual, training camp was a great success, even more so this year for its superb new location. The squad has returned feeling leaner, meaner, and faster, and ready to take on the Tabs in the forthcoming Varsity Match.by Lorna Wellingslast_img read more

Over 13,000 S. African health workers contract coronavirus

first_imgA combination of a recent spike in infections, staff shortages and a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) have been blamed for the infection increases.A recent report by South Africa’s National Institute for Occupational Health said hospital admissions of health workers were increasing weekly in line with the national trend of rising numbers of admissions. The data revealed that by July 12, some 2.6 percent of COVID-19 hospital admissions in South Africa were healthcare workers. Those infected included nurses, doctors, porters, administrators, paramedics and laboratory scientists.  Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told parliament earlier this month that “since the COVID-19 pandemic, PPE supply chains have become severely constrained”. WHO Africa chief Moeti said it was critical to ensure health workers “have the equipment, skills and information they need to keep themselves, their patients and colleagues safe”.Sub-Saharan Africa has recorded more than 750,000 coronavirus cases, including 15,000 deaths. Topics : Coronavirus has infected some 13,000 South African health workers and killed more than 100 of them, the health ministry said Thursday, as the virus takes a toll on frontline caregivers.South Africa holds the highest number of infections on the continent with 408,052 recorded cases and 5,940 deaths so far.It is also the world’s fifth worst-affected country in terms of diagnosed infections.center_img Health ministry spokesman Popo Maja told AFP that 13,174 health workers had become infected as of Tuesday, including 103 deaths and 6,394 people declared recovered.South Africa’s statistics were unveiled as the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 10,000 health workers in 40 countries had been sickened by the virus.”The growth we are seeing in COVID-19 cases in Africa is placing an ever-greater strain on health services across the continent,” said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, at a news conference on Thursday. “This has very real consequences for the individuals who work in them, and there is no more sobering example of this than the rising number of health worker infections,” she said.last_img read more

Westport Winery earns “Outstanding” rating on Message In A Bottle

first_imgFacebook11Tweet0Pin0Submitted by Westport WineryIn the summer issue of Wine Press Northwest, Westport Winery earned an “Outstanding” rating on Message In A Bottle, the latest vintage of their rosé of Sangiovese. This was the largest evaluation of Northwest blush wines in history with 122 entries. Of those, 30 were honored with an “Outstanding” defined by the magazine as having “superior characteristics and should be highly sought after.”Director of Winemaking, Dana Roberts, attributes much of this wine’s success to the grape grower, Mike Sauer of Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA outside of Wapato, Washington. Roberts said, “Working with Mike is a privilege. He’s a pioneer in the industry with such attention to detail that it makes my job a lot easier. The Grosso clone seems to be the perfect type of Sangiovese to create the ultimate Washington rosé.”The judges said, “Aromas of strawberry freezer jam and raspberry play out on the palate. There’s a drizzle of residual sugar on the entry, yet mouth-watering acidity akin to cranberry and blood orange makes for a zippy and delightful finish.”In 2016 Westport Winery was honored as one of the top twenty most-admired wineries in North America by Winery & Vineyard Management Magazine. It was named 2011 Washington Winery to Watch by Wine Press Northwest. They have been voted Best Winery by King 5 Evening Magazine six times.
