US calls on Russia, Turkey, UAE to halt Libya intervention

first_imgUNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States is calling on Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates to immediately halt their military interventions in Libya as demanded in a cease-fire agreement. The U.S. is also urging the three countries to accept Libyan sovereignty as the North African nation moves toward unifying its government, elections and ending years of fighting. U.S. deputy ambassador at the U.N. singled out the three key foreign backers of Libya’s rival governments in a speech to the Security Council. Richard Mills spoke after acting U.N. envoy Stephanie Williams said flights carrying military cargo were continuing to both sides and called for all foreign fighters and mercenaries to leave Libya.last_img

Ukraine shuts TV channels owned by Russia-friendly tycoon

first_imgKYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine has shut several television channels owned by a Russia-linked magnate in what the nation’s president has described as a move to fight Kremlin propaganda. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Wednesday that stopping the broadcasts and blocking the assets of the three channels was a “difficult” but necessary decision to counter “propaganda financed by the aggressor country.” The now-blocked 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK channels belong to a businessman with personal ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The businessman says he will appeal the broadcast ban. Ukraine has been locked in a tug of war with Russia, which annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and cast its support behind pro-Moscow insurgents in eastern Ukraine.last_img
