Daniel O’Donnell has revealed how he suffered from exhaustion in the 1990s. The Kincasslagh man, 57, said he was doing ‘simply too much work’ as he shared the most important things he’s learnt through his life speaking to the Irish Mirror. He said: “In the 1990s I suffered exhaustion. I think it was simply too much work – I was over-extending myself. I was hoarse and just couldn’t get singing. Maybe we have an in-built mechanism that saves us from things, and the only way to make me stop was for my voice to go.That’s what I needed. I took time out – I went to a singing teacher and also to a gym, which I hated, so that didn’t continue! It took me a while to build up again, but I learnt from it. Before that, I would go to the opening of an envelope.“Now I limit what I do.” However, that hasn’t stopped the 57-year-old from releasing a new album with over 60 tracks!“My new album Halfway To Paradise contains 60 tracks over 3 CDs, with tributes to The Beatles, Elvis and Cliff Richard.“The music is very much from the rock ‘n’ roll 50s and 60s.”The Donegal sensation also revealed the love for Donegal’s Mary From Dungloe Festival.“I grew up in Donegal and I enjoy what this area offers. This is where I live and this is where I became what I am. “It’s a rural community and I know all the people and they know me. I’m in the country and by the sea – the Atlantic Ocean is just in front of me.“It’s beautiful. I love getting involved in local community events, and I get as much pleasure singing for 10 people at a local festival as I do for 1,000 in a concert hall.“I take part in the Mary From Dungloe Festival every year. My wife Majella and I dressed up…“I don’t even know what we were supposed to be, it was just something they gave us – maybe a prince and princess. “We were on a float waving to everyone and Olivia, my four-year-old granddaughter, came on the float with us for a bit.“My greatest passion in life is my family.“Majella has two kids, who have been such a joy to me.“Siobhan now has children of her own – Olivia and 18-month-old Archie, and I chat to them on WhatsApp every day.“I know it’s not the same as a hug, but God it’s great to see them and for them to see us.“We’re lucky they don’t live too far away, so we physically see them too.”‘I was over-extending myself’ – Daniel O’Donnell reveals how he suffered from exhaustion was last modified: October 6th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
3 December 2015Local government was increasingly being identified as the strategic enabler of national economic and development objectives, said South African Local Government Association chairperson Thabo Manyoni, speaking on the first day of the seventh Africities Summit.Africities 7 Summit, as it is official known, is being held in Johannesburg and runs until 3 December. It brings together hundreds of city officials from across the continent, where they are unpacking and exploring the future of urbanisation in Africa. It is an important topic given that more than half of Africa’s population is expected to live in cities by the year 2050, according to Associated Press.Manyoni said the most obvious impact of the current global economic system was rising inequality and its socioeconomic impact. “It is said that Africa and Asia will account for 90% of urban growth over the next 35 years. They have very young populations, which represents a massive potential expansion of the labour force and middle class. This is a great advantage, if properly managed.”Only 28% of the labour force in Africa occupied stable wage-earning jobs, he said, compared to 63% in vulnerable employment, with over 60% of urban dwellers in sub-Saharan Africa currently living in informal settlements.“This means that potential tax bases of urban governments are relatively small, creating a serious financial imbalance to address the vast service delivery and economic infrastructure needs. This must inform a differentiated approach to tackling the development agenda in our context.”Leaders should not forget to invest in the development of small towns and rural villages, which were often the bedrock of agricultural wealth, heritage and cultural diversity, Manyoni added.“We have a responsibility to fashion a uniquely African response to social justice, equality in opportunity and sustainable infrastructure development and resource use.”The summit ties in with the National Development Plan, or Vision 2030, which places emphasis on overcoming the challenges of the present to build a better South Africa and Africa. It was opened by Minister Jeff Radebe, the minister in The Presidency responsible for planning. “What has worked yesterday, might not work today,” he said, placing the focus firmly on looking towards the future.Development had to match population growth or the cities would face more crumbling infrastructure and social unrest, Radebe said. Also part of the discussions over the five days will be climate change as the CoP21 takes place in Paris, as well as urban security following the recent attacks in Bamako, Garissa, Nairobi, Paris and other cities. The central theme of the Africities 7 Summit is “Shaping the future of Africa with the people: the contribution of African local authorities to Agenda 2063 of the African Union”.Agenda 2063 – Towards an Africa We Want encourages all people on the continent to play an active role to see the following vision come to fruition:We aspire that by 2063, Africa shall be a prosperous continent, with the means and resources to drive its own development;Where African people have a high standard of living, quality of life, sound health and well-being;A continent full of well-educated citizens through a skills revolution underpinned by science, technology and innovation for a knowledge society;Cities and other settlements are hubs of cultural and economic activities, with modernised infrastructure, and people have access to all the basic necessities of life including shelter, water, sanitation, energy, public transport and ICT; and,Economies are structurally transformed to create shared growth, decent jobs and economic opportunities for all.Taking its cue from Agenda 2063, organisers say the Africities Summit 7 theme is designed to connect a rigorous understanding of likely future trends with a strategic debate about what needs to be done at the local level, with immediate effect to address the emergency of service delivery, shelter, economic opportunities, safe and affordable mobility and more. The summit intends to be the mouthpiece of the 15 000 African local governments. More than 5 000 local government officials are participating, representing all the stakeholders of African local life as well as their partners of the other regions of the world. The Africities 7 Exhibition is hosting between 400 and 500 exhibitors. The Africities Summit pursues two major objectives:Defining appropriate shared strategies in order to improve the living conditions of the people at local level; and,Contributing to the integration, peace and unity of Africa starting from the grassroots. The meeting has been held in various African cities every three years since it was launched in 1998 in Abidjan, the largest city of Ivory Coast.SouthAfrica.info reporter
India opener Gautam Gambhir, who played a pivotal role in helping India secure a draw in the final Test in Cape Town against South Africa, has bagged the highest price so far in the ongoing Indian Premier League season IV auction in Bangalore.Gambhir, who played for the IPL Delhi team till last season, was bought by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan’s IPL team Kolkata for a whooping Rs 11.04 crores on Saturday – the first day of the two-day auction.Gambhir, who led Delhi Daredevils in the last edition, was surprisingly not bid for by his former team, even as others clamored for the left-hander. New franchises Pune, Kochi as well as Mumbai bid aggressively for him before Kolkata clinched the deal. But, the more surprising was that some big names that did come up for bidding were left unpicked by any teams.Sourav Ganguly, Brian Lara, Mark Boucher, Chris Gayle and South African Herschelle Gibbs were all left unpicked. However, all these players will again come under the hammer again on Sunday.Ten franchises are participating in the two-day bidding, including the Rajasthan IPL team and the Punjab IPL team, who were disqualified by the Indian Premier League following breach of ownership regulations but cleared following a Mumbai High Court decision.Over 350 players are up for grabs for the next three seasons, with the sequence of players coming up for auction decided by drawing of lots. The other major earners on the day were Yusuf Pathan, all-rounder Irfan Pathan, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa and England’s Kevin Pietersen.advertisementYusuf Pathan, who earlier represented the Rajasthan Royals, was bought by Kolkata IPL team for Rs 9.66 crore. His brother Irfan was bought by IPL Delhi team for Rs 8.74 crore.Yuvraj Singh was taken away by Pune IPL team for Rs 8.28 crores. Rohit Sharma, who earlier represented IPL Hyderabad in the last season, was sold to Mumbai IPL team for Rs 9.2 crore.S. Sreesanth, who has been performing well in South Africa, was bought by IPL Kochi for Rs 4.14 crore. Mumbai Indian player till IPL season III, Zaheer Khan was bought by IPL Bangalore for Rs 4.14 crores.Rahul Dravid was taken by IPL Rajasthan Rs 3.2 crores. He earlier played for IPL Bangalore.Meanwhile, former Kolkata IPL player Brendon McCullum, who struck the first ton of the League in IPL season 1, was bought by Kochi for Rs 4.14 crores.IPL Hyderabad skipper in the last season, Adam Gilchrist was sold to Kings XI Punjab for Rs 4.14 crore. His teammate, VVS Laxman was bought by Kochi IPL team for Rs 1.84 crore.Andrew Symonds was bought by IPL Mumbai for Rs 3.91 crore. Now, he and Harbhajan Singh will be in the same team. It will be interesting to see how the two will get along considering that they were involved in a bitter spat of the racist nature when Australia had toured India in September 2008.IPL Kolkata it seems have completely revamped their team. Another good pick from them this season is Kevin Pietersen. They bought him for Rs 9.66 crore.Robin Uthappa, who represented Bangalore IPL team in the last season, was bought by Pune IPL team for Rs 9.66 crore.Twelve players, including India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (IPL Chennai), Sachin Tendulkar (IPL Mumbai) and Shane Warne (IPL Rajasthan) were retained by their original franchises.Teams are allowed a maximum of Rs 40.8 crores to spend, which includes money for those players retained from previous seasons. The 2011 IPL season will be held from April 8-May 22.IPL season 4 table 1PlayerBought byPrice in RsFormer team 2Gautam GambhirIPL Kolkata11.04 crIPL Delhi 3Tillakaratne DilshanIPL Bangalore 2.99 crIPL Delhi 4Zaheer KhanIPL Bangalore 4.14 crIPL Mumbai 5Ross TaylorIPL Rajasthan 4.6 crIPL Bangalore 6Yusuf PathanIPL Kolkata 9.66 crIPL Rajasthan 7Kevin PietersenIPL Kolkata 3.00 crIPL Bangalore 8Mahela JayawardeneIPL Kochi 6.9 crIPL Punjab 9Yuvraj SinghIPL Pune 8.28 crIPL Punjab 10Camroon WhiteIPL Hyderabad 4.99 crIPL Bangalore 11AB de VilliersIPL Bangalore 5 crIPL Delhi 12Kumar SangakkaraIPL Hyderabad 3.22 crIPL Punjab 13Jacques KallisIPL Kolkata 5.06 crIPL Bangalore 14Andrew SymondsIPL Mumbai 3.91 crIPL Hyderabad15Rahul DravidIPL Rajasthan 3.2 crIPL Bangalore 16Rohit SharmaIPL Mumbai 9.2 crIPL Hyderabad 17Adam GilchristIPL Punjab 4.14 crIPL Hyderabad 18Graeme SmithIPL Pune 2.3 crIPL Rajasthan 19Robin UthappaIPL Pune 9.66 crIPL Bangalore 20John BothaIPL Rajasthan 4.37 crIPL Rajasthan 21VVS LaxmanIPL Kochi 1.84 crIPL Hyderabad 22Daniel VettoriIPL Bangalore 2.53 crIPL Delhi 23Brendon McCullumIPL Kochi 2.18 crIPL Kolkata 24S SreesanthIPL Kochi 1.14 crIPL Punjab 25Irfan PathanIPL Delhi 8.74 crIPL Punjab 26R.P. In happier times, Dwayne and Siohvaughn Wade.Wade Wife Arrested – The Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade has asked a Chicago judge to suspend his ex-wife’s right to visitation with their two children after a weekend incident that delayed the boys’ return to his custody and led to her arrest.Wade’s attorney, James Pritikin, filed an emergency motion and appeared in court Tuesday to have it heard, hours before the Heat guard was to play in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.A hearing was set for June 26, which would be the date of Game 7 if the Heat and Thunder extend the series to its limit.Wade told The Associated Press that his sons have been with him in Miami since about 6 a.m. Sunday — “That’s what mattered most to me, getting them here to be with me on Father’s Day,” he said — and that the incident has not adversely affected his play in the championship series.Siohvaughn Funches-Wade was charged with two counts of attempted child abduction, two counts of unlawful visitation interference and one count of resisting arrest, Cook County Sheriff’s spokesman Frank Bilecki told The AP on Tuesday. Another woman at the home at the time, Nadgee Alarcon, was charged with one count of resisting arrest, Bilecki said. All the charges are misdemeanors.Funches-Wade posted $10,000 bond on Monday, Bilecki said, and is due back in court in August. It was not known if she had an attorney.“Once again, S.L. has used our minor children as the proverbial pawns in this contentious dissolution of marriage action,” Wade wrote in the filing, using initials to protect identities but referring to his ex-wife. “This court must take action to protect our minor children from further exposure to the present environment S.L. creates while they are in her care and preventing S.L. from exercising her parenting time in a manner that is harmful to our children.”The couple was divorced in 2010. Wade was awarded custody of the boys in March 2011. His ex-wife’s appeal of that decision was denied in December, and the couple is scheduled to return to court in September in an attempt to complete financial terms of the divorce.“The minor children have been subjected to great deal of drama/trauma as a result of S.L.’s conduct,” the filing said.Dwyane Wade has asked a Chicago judge to suspend his ex-wife’s right to visitation with their two children after a weekend incident that delayed the boys’ return to his custody and led to her arrest.According to the filing, the two boys were to be picked up by Wade’s sister around noon Saturday so they could make a 3:05 p.m. flight from Chicago to Miami so they could be in South Florida for the entirety of Father’s Day.Wade’s sister got no response at the home, and after “several hours,” the sheriff’s office was called to send someone to the scene, according to the filing. It also said Funches-Wade attempted to leave the home without the children when one of the responding deputies tried taking her into custody. The boys, at that time, were with Alarcon inside the home, according to the filing.Wade eventually hired a private jet to bring his sons home early Sunday, and upon their arrival, his older son told him that Alarcon “smacked him on the head,” according to court records.Records show Funches-Wade was transferred to a hospital after the incident on Saturday. She told officers she was experiencing shortness of breath and thought she was having an asthma attack.Wade recently finished writing a book primarily about fatherhood and the custody fight for his sons. It will be released Sept. 4.
Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones tweeted “horrible” when Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted in NFL history, and it has cost him an undisclosed amount fine and suspension from the team until he “completes educational training” for his actions, according to the club.Sam, the former Missouri linebacker was selected by the St. Louis Rams, with the next-to-last pick in the draft. His reaction—including tears and a kiss from his male friend—was captured on television, prompting Jones to post on Twitter: “OMG. Horrible.”In the NFL, which is seeking to create a culture of sensitivity, Jones’ reaction was not welcomed, even if it represented many others’ views, too.“I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media,” Jones said in a statement released by the team. “I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment. I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team, and I wish him all the best in his NFL career. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ross, my teammates, coaches, staff and fans for these tweets. I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward.”“We met with Don today about respect, discrimination and judgment, coach Joe Philbin said. “These comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program. We will continue to emphasize and educate our players that these statements will not be tolerated.”Rams head coach Jeff Fisher told NFL Network soon after Sam was picked that he didn’t anticipate issues about his sexuality.“I don’t have any concern whatsoever. We drafted a good football player,” Fisher said. “I’m excited to get him on the practice field and get him going so yeah, there’s gonna be a little extra tension for a couple days, but Michael was the SEC co-defensive player of the year.”Sam had 11 1/2 sacks last season for Missouri. Many believe he would have been selected higher had he stayed essentially in the closet. NFL scouts, of course, likely would have learned he was gay after they began evaluating prospects after the season, since Sam was out to his college teammates — and there was a strong chance of him being outed against his will.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection‘s detail of the arrest is below.SAN DIEGO—Last week, Border Patrol agents arrested a group of six men who entered the United States illegally. One man was wanted for murder in Oaxaca, Mexico. The incident occurred on Friday, March 8, at approximately 3:30 p.m., near Imperial Beach, Calif., when a scope operator notified agents that six individuals climbed the primary border fence and passed through a cut in the old secondary border fence.Agents responded and apprehended six men just north of the secondary fence breach. With no documentation allowing them to remain in the U.S., the men were placed under arrest and transported to a nearby station.Border Patrol agents ran record checks on the men which revealed that one of them, 26-year-old Mexican national Antonio Santiago-Ruiz, possessed an outstanding warrant for homicide issued by the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. On March 13, in coordination with Mexico’s General Office of the Republic, Santiago-Ruiz was turned over to Mexican government officials at the San Ysidro port of entry due to his outstanding warrant.San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott stated, “While criminals persist in their illegal activity, we too are persistent. The arrest of Antonio Santiago-Ruiz illustrates this well. We can be thankful that agents arrested this individual who attempted to escape justice.”The five remaining men, three from Mexico, one from Honduras, and one from Guatemala, were processed for expedited removal. To prevent the illicit smuggling of humans, drugs, and other contraband, the U.S. Border Patrol maintains a high level of vigilance on corridors of egress away from our Nation’s borders. It’s no secret that newsstand sales are, at best, a marginal revenue source for the vast majority of magazine publishers. Titles that offer per-issue subscription discounts of less than 50 percent off the cover price saw, on average, newsstand declines of between 3 and 5 percent over the two-year period. Titles offering subscription discounts of 50 to 70 percent, however, experienced declines around 11 percent. Titles taking the aggressive stance of offering subscription discounts greater than 70 percent saw newsstand sales slip over 16 percent, on average. In an effort to measure the correlation between newsstand declines and subscription discounts—or, more realistically, the degree to which such discounts are eating into newsstand sales—MagNet examined cover prices, subscription prices, and sales trends for 70 of the top 100 selling regular frequency magazines over a two-year period ending December, 2015. SIPs were not considered. Not surprisingly, the study found a direct correlation between deep subscription discounts and lagging newsstand sales, as the less money consumers will save with a subscription, the more apt they are to purchase a frequency title one issue at a time. What is surprising, perhaps, is the extent to which this idea has manifested itself in the marketplace. MagNet’s own conclusion is kinder to retail. Most monthly titles analyzed sit squarely in that 50-to-70 percent range; MagNet reports that the average subscription discount was 63 percent off, compared to just 27 percent off for quarterly titles. Accordingly, newsstand sales of those monthly titles dropped 15.2 percent over the two-year period ending December, 2015, while sales of quarterly titles fell 3.4 percent. None of this likely comes as a surprise to publishers, many of whose print editions are driven primarily by advertising as opposed to single-copy or subscription sales. It raises questions, however, about what a magazine offering subscription rates for 70, 80, or even 90 percent off the cover price is still doing on the newsstand to begin with. Those looking to maintain high ratebases by aggressively discounting subscription rates, however, may want to reconsider that strategy, according to a new study from MagNet. “We ask publishers to take a step back and reconsider their aggressive ratebases, their deeply discounted subscription offerings, and to again refocus on the newsstand, which we believe is, or could again be, their most profitable circulation revenue source,” reads the study.
“The BHN transaction is another important step in our strategy of expanding our event portfolio as well as to move into related market segments such as hotels and hospitality,” Kemp wrote in the memo. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. But CEO Tom Kemp said in a companywide memo that the acquisition is the largest in Northstar’s history. Jim Burba and Bob Hayes, founders of BHN, will continue to run the portfolio as Northstar’s Hospitality Group. The group will report to Alicia Evanko, SVP of Events, and Bob Sullivan, president of Northstar’s Travel Group. Northstar Travel Group announced Monday that it has acquired the Burba Hotel Network (BHN) and its portfolio of hotel investment conferences—and said that with this deal, event revenues at the company now surpass print for the first time. The BHN portfolio also includes ALIS, the largest hotel investment conference in the world, which is sponsored by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). Northstar Travel Group will co-produce ALIS with the AHLA. BHN, based in Costa Mesa, Calif., consists of 10 events and conferences globally. These include the Alternative Ownership Conference Asia Pacific, which takes place in Singapore, as well as the Hotel Investment Conference Europe, which takes place in London. Northstar Travel Group already owns several international events, including CruiseWorld China Shanghai, and Phocuswright Europe. Northstar is only the latest media company to shift its sights toward events, as print revenues decrease across the media landscape. Similar recalibrations have happened at Informa and UBM. Event revenues grew 1.2 percent across the B2B space in 2016, while print revenues dropped 8.6 percent, according to Connectiv’s BIN Report.

Karma Karma Automotive is getting ready to debut some new models in Shanghai — this we knew. What we didn’t know was how exactly they were going to be powered. Thanks to an announcement from the California-based, Chinese-owned automaker on Thursday, now we know that too.First of all, Karma is calling its vehicles “all-electric,” but that’s a bunch of malarkey. Its cars can more accurately be described as range-extended electric vehicles, which is another way of saying that they’re a fancy plug-in hybrid where the wheels are always driven electrically, with no mechanical connection to the internal combustion engine. That internal combustion engine is being sourced from BMW. It’s a turbocharged three-cylinder unit that might be related to the unit found in the base Mini Cooper and the BMW i8. Still, Karma says that BMW has been working with the brand since 2015 to develop the engine, so it could end up being something more bespoke.”BMW is a natural fit for Karma’s luxury-tech focus because it is a proven technology leader renowned for conceiving and delivering ground-breaking innovations,” said Bob Kruse, chief technology officer for Karma, in a statement. The 2020 Karma Revero in which this new BMW-assisted drivetrain will live was designed in-house by Karma and will make its official debut at the Shanghai motor show later this month.
