FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The unemployment rate in Northeast B.C. saw an increase in January. The unemployment rate in January was 5.5 percent compared to 4.7 percent in December of 2018.January has been the highest recorded unemployment percentage since September 2018 at 5.6 percent, an estimated 39,900 people are employed in a labour force of 42,100. A recent statement made by Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology, on the release of the January Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada;“As demonstrated in the newest results, higher wages, low unemployment and good jobs in British Columbia show that people are at the centre of our strong and stable economy.Wages continued to rise in January, with B.C. among the top provinces for year-over-year growth. In the past year, B.C.’s average wages grew by 4.1%, the highest among provinces. In fact, 2018 was B.C.’s highest annual wage growth in the past 10 years.B.C.’s unemployment rate remained the lowest in Canada — for the 17th month in a row — at 4.7%. Private sector jobs have been fuelling employment growth in the province, with an increase of 64,800 in the past year. This means people continue to see the benefit of a high-performing economy following many years of wage stagnation.”B.C.’s economy is expected to outperform the rest of Canada over the next three years. The Economic Forecast Council, a group of bank economists and analysts that are independent of government, estimates that B.C.’s real gross domestic product is expected to grow by 2.6% in both 2019 and 2020. “We’re working hard to nurture a sustainable economy that works for people.”

It said a strict vigil in the skies to detect and thwart any act of aggression from Pakistan Air Force is being maintained. Officials said all the frontline IAF bases along India’s western border have been kept on maximum alert. Tensions between the two countries escalated after Indian fighters bombed terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed’s biggest training camp near Balakot deep inside Pakistan on February 26. Pakistan retaliated by attempting to target Indian military installations on February 27. However, the IAF thwarted their plans. The Indian strike on the JeM camp came 12 days after the terror outfit claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a CRPF convoy in Kashmir, killing 40 soldiers.
London: British Prime Minister Theresa May Sunday condemned the “truly appalling” multiple blasts at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter, killing over 160 people, including at least nine foreigners. Six near-simultaneous and coordinated explosions rocked three churches and three five-star hotels frequented by tourists as the Easter Sunday mass were in progress. “The acts of violence against churches and hotels in Sri Lanka are truly appalling, and my deepest sympathies go out to all of those affected at this tragic time,” prime minister May said in a statement on Twitter. US Attorny 2US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said on Thursday he would stay out of any probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election but maintained he did nothing wrong by failing to disclose he met last year with Russia’s ambassador.Sessions, a longtime US senator who was an early and high-ranking player in President Donald Trump’s campaign before becoming the country’s top law enforcement official, announced the decision after several fellow Republicans in Congress suggested the move would be appropriate.”I have recused myself in the matters that deal with the Trump campaign,” Sessions told reporters at a hastily arranged news conference.Sessions said he had been weighing recusal – ruling himself out from any role in the investigations – even before the latest twist of the controversy over ties between Trump associates and Russia that has dogged the early days of the Trump presidency. The president backed Sessions, saying Democrats had politicised the issue and calling the controversy a “total witch hunt.”Sessions’ announcement did nothing to quell concerns among congressional Democrats, a number of whom called for Sessions to step down.Trump and Republicans who control Congress are trying to move past early administration missteps and focus on issues important to them, including immigration, tax cuts and repealing the Obamacare healthcare law.US intelligence agencies concluded last year that Russia hacked and leaked Democratic emails during the election campaign as part of an effort to tilt the vote in Trump’s favor. The Kremlin has denied the allegations.Sessions denied he had contact with Russian officials when he was asked directly during his Senate confirmation hearing to become attorney general whether he had exchanged information with Russian operatives during the election campaign. He told reporters he was “honest and correct” in his response, although he acknowledged he “should have slowed down” and mentioned he had met with the ambassador in his role as a senator.”I never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign,” Sessions said, adding he felt he should not be involved in investigating a campaign in which he had had a role.In a statement on Thursday night, Trump said Sessions “did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional.”Sessions’ meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak were disclosed on Wednesday night by the Washington Post. Sessions received Kislyak in his Senate office in September and also met him in July at a Heritage Foundation event at the Republican National Convention that was attended by about 50 ambassadors.Trump fired national security adviser Michael Flynn last month after disclosures that Flynn had discussed US sanctions on Russia with Kislyak before Trump took office and that Flynn misled vice president Mike Pence about the conversations. The recusal means Sessions, a powerful member of Trump’s inner circle, will not be briefed on details of any probe. Should the Federal Bureau of Investigation decide to move forward with charges, Sessions would not be in a position to weigh in on whether the Department of Justice should take the case.CALLS TO RESIGNHouse of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi urged Sessions to resign and said “his narrow recusal and sorry attempt to explain away his perjury” were inadequate.Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said Sessions’ explanation for failing to tell the Senate about his meetings “is simply not credible.” He called on Sessions to step down and said the Justice Department should name an independent prosecutor to investigate Russian interference.Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee asked the FBI to launch a criminal investigation into Sessions’ statements to Congress about his communication with Russian officials.Sessions is one of many “subjects” of a government investigation of any contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia, two US officials familiar with the probe said. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Sessions was not now a “target” of the probe by the FBI, the Treasury Department, the CIA and the National Security Agency. The investigation, one of the officials said, had a number of subjects because of the numerous contacts between associates of Trump, including Flynn, and the Russian Embassy in Washington as well as Russian and some Ukrainian businessmen and companies. At least two other officials in Trump’s campaign said they also spoke with the Russian ambassador at a conference on the sidelines of the July convention last July, USA Today reported on Thursday.Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner also met with Kislyak in December at Trump Tower in New York, an administration official said on Thursday, confirming a report in the New Yorker. While there is nothing legally wrong with such meetings, the reported contacts raise questions about the White House’s repeated statements that it knew of no further contacts with Russian officials beyond those by Flynn.Trump has accused officials in former Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration of trying to discredit him with questions about Russia contacts. The White House dismissed the disclosure of the Sessions meetings as a partisan attack, saying his contacts with the ambassador had been as a member of the Armed Services Committee.Trump called frequently during his campaign for improved relations with Russia, drawing criticism from Democrats and some Republicans. Ties with Russia have been deeply strained in recent years over Moscow’s military interference in Ukraine, military support for President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and President Vladimir Putin’s intolerance of political dissent. With his administration on the defensive over Russia, Trump’s enthusiasm seems to have cooled, and his top foreign policy advisers have begun talking tougher about Moscow. The Russian Embassy in Washington, shrugging off the uproar, said on Thursday it was in regular contact with “US partners.”
Logo of BNPSenior leaders of BNP have not been taken into confidence about several recent decisions of the party, including joining the parliament and participation in the Bogura election. They have no idea how these decisions were taken either. These leaders are unhappy with the situation but remain silent as the decisions have come from the top level leadership.A number of seniors in BNP have told Prothom Alo, on condition of anonymity, that the party leaders and workers are in a state of confusion over the issues of taking oath, joining parliament and contesting in the Bogura election.Questions loom large as to where these decisions are being taken, at what level and through what process. The leaders are even uncertain whether the incarcerated party chairperson Khaleda Zia has any say in this process. These doubts were furthered when the party’s Bogura-6 election nomination form did not have Khaleda Zia’s signature. The senior leaders are in a dilemma as to whether Khaleda Zia was at all agreeable to the party men taking oath and whether she had actually given any message about joining the Bogura polls. The party’s standing committee had not discussed any of these vital issues, not even about putting forward candidates for the women’s reserved seats. The decisions reportedly came from the party’s exiled acting chairman Tarique Zia in London. Some of the leaders may have had an idea of what was transpiring, but most of these matters had been kept under covers. However, BNP’s standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said to Prothom Alo, “Nothing has taken place without Khaleda Zia’s consent. Anyone saying this, does not know the facts.” He added that there were differences within the party, but that was part and parcel of the party’s democracy.Confusion, nevertheless, persists about the logic behind joining the parliament or taking part in the Bogura polls. The leaders ask, what could justify contesting in the seat where the party’s secretary general had refused to take oath? Also, nomination form for this seat had been taken in Khaleda Zia’s name, but she refused to sign. It had previously been speculated that Khaleda Zia would be freed on bail in exchange of their party men taking oath to parliament, but that did not happen.Addressing a press conference on Friday, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir ruled out any link between the party joining the parliament and Khaleda Zia’s release. He said, “We went to parliament due to the prevailing political circumstances, in the interests of democracy and in the interests of our party. Begum Zia’s release will not be conditional, it will be done legally. She is entitled to be released on bail.”Political scientist and former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Emajuddin Ahmed feels that it was foolish to consider nominating Khaleda Zia for the Bogura 6. He told Prothom Alo that it would be inappropriate to nominate the party chief to the seat where the secretary general had refused to take oath. That was a foolish and bad decision.A number of central leaders try to justify the recent spate of decisions, saying that other than the secretary general, the other MPs-elect would have gone ahead to take oath, even against the party decision. If they were expelled, they would have formed a separate faction of BNP along with others. They would have put forward a candidate for Bogura too. That is why the party’s top leadership took these decisions, they maintained. In this regard, two senior leaders of the party told Prothom Alo, if there were such apprehensions, the matter could have been discussed at the party forum. The manner in which the decisions were taken has left the leaders feeling redundant.*This report, originally published in Prothom Alo print edition, has been rewritten in English by Ayesha Kabir
ActiveVideo has enhanced its CloudTV platform to enable service providers to deliver TV to any connected device as an application and has announced a raft of major customers. The CloudTV H5 platform can, according to ActiveVideo, now support scaleable deployments effectively through the use of four major innovations. These include render layers, enabling complex UIs and animation to be rendered more smoothly and to reduce required bandwidth up to 50%; smart multiplexing, increasing the number of CloudTV sessions delivered across an existing cable QAM network, resulting in 25% throughput improvement, or in an IP network benefiting from adaptive bit rate technology; and dual-stream rendering, allowing the bandwidth-efficient delivery of partial-screen user interfaces that are controlled from the cloud but rendered locally on devices, resulting in enhanced on-screen experiences without taxing the network.A fourth innovation, support for a family of thin clients based on an ultra-light code base, works with the CloudTV platform to deliver consistent user experiences on any connected device, according to the company. Dubbed CloudTV Nano, CloudTV Nano Lite and CloudTV Nanoware, the clients are designed to meet a variety of customer deployment strategies supporting managed and unmanaged devices with UI-in-the-cloud capabilities, according to the company.ActiveVideo, whose technology is already used to support video-on-demand services delivered to legacy set-top boxes from Ziggo in the Netherlands, has also announced three major new customers: US cable operators Charter Communications and Cablevision, and Japanese group Sumitomo.“These four enhancements provide scale, network scale device reach,” said Murali Nemani, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer, ActiveVideo. He said that ActiveVideo’s technology could enable operators to deliver services “straight from the cloud and free the UI from the device dependency”.“Decoupling the UI from device dependency creates a whole new set of opportunities,” said Nemani. “You can deliver the most progressive UIs from the cloud just like a video channel to very lightweight devices and maybe straight to the connected TV. The implication for the total cost of ownership is massive.”Nemani cited a study by ACG Research that found ActiveVideo’s CloudTV produced a saving of 83% in total cost of ownership in five years over a set-top box-based strategy.Nemani said ActiveVideo would support Charter Communications migrate its UI into the cloud and eliminate its dependency on set-top boxes. He said the operator planned to roll out market trials and then roll out nationally.Cablevision will use ActiveVideo’s platform to deliver applications around content ranging from branded ad channels to games platforms on the TV, while Sumitomo will deploy the technology with JCOM, in which it is a 50% stakeholder.
